La última incorporación a la flota de Sea Shepherd Global es el Allankay, un palangrero de merluza negra transformado en barco de conservación marina.

Con la retirada del Bob Barker en el horizonte, empezamos a buscar un sustituto adecuado a principios de 2022. Al cabo de unos meses avistamos el Corinthian Bay, un palangrero de merluza negra construido en Noruega en 1998 y alargado 10 metros en 2012.Había varias empresas pesqueras que también querían adquirir el buque, pero gracias a nuestra compra este barco no volverá a pescar nunca más.
El barco ha sido rebautizado en honor a una pareja australiana, Allan y Kay, que generosamente donaron 5 millones de dólares australianos a Sea Shepherd Australia para la compra de un nuevo barco.
El 28 de abril tuvimos una pequeña ceremonia de entrega en el puente del barco mientras estaba atracado en Henderson, Australia Occidental. A continuación, el barco fue trasladado a Walvis Bay, Namibia, donde se llevaron a cabo importantes trabajos de reacondicionamiento durante el verano y el otoño para transformarlo en un buque de conservación. Se retiraron todas las artes de pesca y el equipo de procesamiento, y los sedales se donaron a artistas locales.
El Allankay tiene 54,5 metros de eslora y una velocidad máxima de 12,5 nudos. En la actualidad tiene capacidad para 30 tripulantes, pero una segunda reforma a finales de este año añadirá literas para al menos 40 personas.
Reforzado contra el hielo y preparado para trabajar en climas polares, el Allankay se dirige ahora al Océano Antártico para la Operación Defensa Antártica, y confiamos en que será un buque capaz en nuestros esfuerzos de conservación en los años venideros.
